Retama Park’s new grass course will be on display as live Thoroughbred racing continues Friday and Saturday nights. This Friday, October 26, will be the first time this year runners compete over the 7/8th-mile grass oval.
“We have four grass races each night this weekend and hopefully we will see some break out performances in the preps to propel horses into our two biggest races”, said Retama Park Racing Secretary James Leatherman.
The $75,000 M2 Technology El Joven for colts and the $75,000 La Senorita for fillies are scheduled for November 10th. Two prep races for each race are carded with fillies on Friday and colts on Saturday.
Retama Park management made the decision to postpone opening the new course until re-seeding took hold and matured.
“We wanted to avoid any cancellation of turf racing due to possible drought conditions, and we made the decision this summer to re-seed with Intermediate Rye and not be subjected to possible drought conditions impacting our former Bermuda grass course,” said Leatherman. “It looks like it was the right call. Our grass course is beautiful right now.”
