Texas-bred Ol Winedrinker Who, last year’s Texas Champion Older Horse, got busy working on the defense of his title with an upset victory in Sunday’s $75,000 San Juan County Commissioners Handicap at SunRay Park in Farmington, New Mexico.

Bred and owned by Sam E. and Sammy L. Stevens, the 5-year-old gelded son of Sligo Bay (Ire) got up to win the 1 1/8-mile contest by a head with Carlos Madeira riding for trainer Joel Marr. He clocked the distance in 1:51.80 and returned $21 for a $2 win bet as a 9-1 longshot. This marked the fifth career stakes win for Ol Winedrinker Who and improved his record to 24-8-4-3 with earnings of $401,847.
