Shotgun Kowboy, one of the all-time leading Oklahoma-bred runners, has been retired from racing, according to a news release from Oaklawn. The 8-year-old gelding by Kodiak Kowboy was entered in an allowance race at the Arkansas track for Friday but breeder, owner and trainer C.R. Trout reported that he sustained a sesamoid fracture.

All told, Shotgun Kowboy won 15 times with five seconds and eight thirds from 40 career starts with earnings of $1,548,684. He enjoyed tremendous success in his home state at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, where he won the 2015 Oklahoma Derby (G3). That made him for the first Oklahoma-bred to win the track’s signature race since Clever Trevor in 1989. He also won five Oklahoma Classics races, including the last four runnings of the Oklahoma Classics Cup.

While he dominated against Oklahoma-breds, he also more than proved he could run with open company. He won the Lone Star Park Handicap (G3) in 2018 and placed in five other graded races.
